A participant in my investing seminars, asked how he could realized falsified indices like EPS, P/E, P/S, in order to avoid these stocks.
My Answer:
You don't find falsified indices, because the way each one is calculated is a given, and therefore controllable. If an analyst or a stock market research firm, was falsifying indices like the ones you mentioned (EPS, P/E, P/S), to look better, surely someone else would find them, and the falsifier will lose face and lose all credibility - the falsifier would be 'finished'.
Unless you mean the same indices, in terms of future estimates. But that is not a matter of falsifying data; it's a matter of estimates. An estimate is not certain, it is not a fact. It is something uncertain, more or less.
Falsifying data, you meet in (listed) companies, in terms of the profits they show. They may have shown better results than the real ones - there have been several such cases, both in the US stock market and in the Greek stock market. Of course, "many" does not mean a majority, it is a minority, but because it happens sometimes, we must keep in mind.
Generally speaking, if a company cook the books / falsifying the profits, you can't control it/ know it.
In my investing seminars, I often mention something that has happened to me: in the past, I had chosen as an interesting concept with big growth prospect, to find Chinese companies of small capitalization, listed on the American stock market. As a small capitalization (small size), operating in China, in an object I found interesting [* note, see in the end of article], I thought they had the prospect of a great growth long term. However, their stock price was steadily declining and went lower and lower, causing me big loses.
But at some point, I was wondered, how it is done in almost all small-cap Chinese companies, and while they have a promising concept, to have a strong downward trend?
So then I started looking for it online (on internet/ google), and I found out in all of them, that in reality they were much smaller than what they were presenting, and they obviously falsified their data to bigger ones, presented inflated sales and profits.
So it was an established “business”, to get tiny chinese companies into the US stock market by falsifying data and look bigger and better; many investors believed their fake 'stories', and these companies raised money. That is, common fraudsters.
How did I realize all this scam? I used the Chinese google, and searched with their brands, but using Chinese letters/characters (I copied them from their web-site), and after the results I found (in chinese), I did an automatic translation, which may not have been perfect, but it made sense. I noticed in almost all of these small cap companies, that while they themselves were saying that they were expanding and they had increasingly large sales and profits, that on Chinese google or on a site of a large Chinese newspaper or media, I did not find reports/results that 'justified' the presence and extent of they said they had … many times I didn't even find results, as if they were non-existent. Then I contacted them, from the Contact Tab, I found on their web-site, and asked them my questions, and of course, I didn't get an answer - what would possibly answer?
I also found that their web-sites were very 'poor', very static, very simple. It is supposed that they were developing and fast growing companies, and they did not have a tab, e.g. for Jobs/ Personnel, when even a small Greek company, which really operates, however, has. And other similar things.
I found out their fraud, but after I had been deceived.
Conclusion: Do not trust the Chinese. Don't give them blind-trust. Be skeptic before you invest. We also learned this in the recent coronavirus pandemic, where the data the chinese provided, were much understated than the real ones. And their neighbors (Japanese, Koreans, Taiwanese), although they do business with them, still do not trust them.
* Note: Interesting subject does not mean innovative or technological. Example: One of the small cap chinese companies, I had found, raised pigs, that is, it was a livestock unit, modern in its words. Its subject was interesting because it was a modern and expanding pig breeding unit, and as its sales network grew and as Chinese citizens improved their living standards, they wanted to eat better, so they would like to eat meat more often. In this way, it looked like a very promising concept, without being something 'unique' or extra-ordinary.
And because you can't be sure if a business, big or small cooks the books (example of a big american: ENRON), that's why it's good to choose from companies that give a dividend, much more if it's high. Why? Because the dividend is (real) money given to shareholders. To give, there is. The dividend cannot be cooked. Sales and profits can be cooked/ falsified.
And if one is oriented towards companies that give a dividend, it has a double benefit (the first is that the dividend ensures that the company does have money, so it is not a fraud): If it reinvests the dividend it receives, in the long run, it strengthens the compounding process, and helps to sharpen somewhat faster the yield curve, in order to become exponential, for the investor to gain satisfactorily. And this is the second benefit.

Κάποια στιγμή, πονηρεύτηκα, διερωτούμενος Πως γίνεται και ουσιαστικά σε όλες τις μικρής κεφαλαιοποίησης κινέζικες εταιρίες, και ενώ έχουν ένα concept ελπιδοφόρο, να έχουν πτωτική τάση;
Πως κατάλαβα ότι έπαιζε τέτοια απάτη; Έμπαινα στο κινέζικο google, και έκανα αναζήτηση με τις μπράντες τους αλλά χρησιμοποιώντας τα κινέζικα γράμματα (τα αντέγραφα από το site τους), και έπειτα από τα αποτελέσματα που έβρισκα, έκανα αυτόματη μετάφραση, που μπορεί να μην ήταν τέλεια, αλλά έβγαζα νόημα. Παρατήρησα σχεδόν σε όλες αυτές τις μικρές εταιρίες, που ενώ οι ίδιες έλεγαν ότι επεκτείνονταν και αύξαναν πωλήσεις και κέρδη, ότι στο κινέζικο google ή σε site κινέζικης μεγάλης εφημερίδας ή μέσου ενημέρωσης, δεν έβρισκα αναφορές που να ‘δικαιολογούν’ την παρουσία και έκταση που οι ίδιες ανέφεραν ότι είχαν , πολλές φορές δεν έβρισκα καν αποτελέσματα, σαν να ήταν ανύπαρκτες. Έπειτα επικοινωνούσα μαζί τους, από το contact που έβρισκα στο site τους, και τους έθετα τις απορίες μου, και βεβαίως, απάντηση δεν ελάμβανα – τι να απαντούσαν;
